Historical Heritage
The Fayetteville area has been inhabited for over 12,000 years, originally home to various Siouan Native American peoples. The region was heavily settled by Scottish Highlanders in the mid-to-late 1700s, most of whom were Gaelic-speaking immigrants who brought their rich cultural traditions.
In 1783, the settlements of Cross Creek and Campbelton united and incorporated as Fayetteville—the first city in the United States to be named in honor of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, the French military officer who was a hero of the American Revolutionary War. This historic naming occurred shortly after Lafayette's triumphant return tour of America.
During the Civil War, Fayetteville served as a vital Confederate arsenal and supply center. In March 1865, General William T. Sherman and his 60,000-man army attacked and destroyed the Confederate arsenal, marking a significant moment in the city's history.
Fort Liberty (originally Camp Bragg) was established in 1918 as an artillery training ground during World War I. Named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg, the installation was renamed Fort Liberty in June 2023 to honor the core Army value of liberty and move away from Confederate associations. For over a century, the fort has been integral to Fayetteville's identity and economy.
