History of Fayetteville & Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty)
History of Fayetteville, NC
Fayetteville's story begins long before it became a military hub. From colonial trading posts to a center of Revolutionary fervor, the city has played a pivotal role in North Carolina history.
Colonial Foundations (1750s-1780s)
Fayetteville originated from two separate settlements along the Cape Fear River: Cross Creek (established as a trading post in 1756) and Campbellton (established 1762). These towns merged in 1783 to form Fayetteville, named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, the French hero of the American Revolution.
- Did you know? Fayetteville was the first American city named after Lafayette, and he visited the city personally in 1825 during his grand tour of the United States.
Revolutionary Era & Early Statehood
Following the American Revolution, Fayetteville was a political powerhouse. The North Carolina General Assembly met here frequently, and in 1789, the city hosted the convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution. That same year, the General Assembly chartered the University of North Carolina while meeting in Fayetteville. For a time, the city was a top contender to become the permanent state capital.
19th Century: Trade and Tragedy
In the early 1800s, Fayetteville thrived as an inland port, shipping naval stores, lumber, and flour down the Cape Fear River to Wilmington.
- The Great Fire of 1831: A devastating fire destroyed much of the city, including the State House. The iconic Market House (completed 1832) was built on the ruins and stands today as a National Historic Landmark.
- Civil War: Fayetteville was home to a key U.S. Arsenal. In 1865, Union General William T. Sherman's troops occupied the city and destroyed the arsenal, foundries, and newspaper offices.
20th Century: The Military Era Begins
The city's trajectory changed forever in 1918 with the establishment of Camp Bragg (now Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty)) as an artillery training ground. It expanded rapidly during World War II, becoming a permanent installation and eventually the "Home of the Airborne."
The base fueled massive population growth, transforming Fayetteville from a small market town into a bustling military city. The population jumped from approx. published totals in 1930 to over published totals by current cycle.
Modern Era
Today, Fayetteville balances its rich heritage with modern growth. Recent years have seen the revitalization of downtown, the construction of the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, and the renaming of the military post to Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty) and back to Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty) (in honor of WWII hero Roland L. Bragg) in current cycle.
