Fayetteville grew from Cross Creek, settled in 1755, and was renamed in 1783 as the first place in North America honoring Lafayette. North Carolina ratified the Constitution there in 1789, the Market House rose after the 1831 fire, Sherman destroyed the arsenal in 1865, and Camp Bragg opened in 1918. The post, briefly Fort Liberty, became Fort Bragg again in 2025.
