910 Area Code: Fayetteville, NC Region & the 472 Overlay

By FayettevilleNC.net Editorial Staff•Verification & Data Standards•••1127 words

The 910 area code serves southeastern North Carolina, including Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Jacksonville, Lumberton and Wilmington in Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson and New Hanover counties. Area code 472 is an overlay for the same region: the state approved it in June 2021, and new lines could receive 472 numbers beginning October 7, 2022. Existing 910 numbers did not change, and local calls use 10-digit dialing.

The 910 and 472 area codes cover southeastern North Carolina, the region anchored by Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, Wilmington, Jacksonville and Lumberton. A 910 or 472 number on caller ID does not prove the caller is local: numbers move with their owners, and spoofed calls can fake a local area code and exchange. This guide explains where 910 reaches, why 472 numbers started appearing, how local dialing works, and how to tell a real local call from a spoofed one.

Where the 910 Area Code Reaches

The North Carolina Utilities Commission (NCUC) describes the 910 area as serving "southeastern North Carolina including the cities of Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Lumberton, Wilmington, and the military installation of Fort Bragg, within the counties of Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson, and New Hanover." Those four counties are the population centers the state names; the area code also covers surrounding rural counties between the Sandhills and the coast. Wikipedia's summary of the code adds Laurinburg to the list of cities served.

In practical terms, a 910 number could be:

  • Fayetteville and Cumberland County, including Hope Mills, Spring Lake and Fort Bragg itself.
  • Jacksonville and Onslow County.
  • Lumberton and Robeson County, south of Fayetteville.
  • Wilmington and New Hanover County.

Area codes are assigned to the person or line, not to the place the phone is today. A 910 cell number can belong to someone who moved away years ago, and a newcomer to Fayetteville may keep an out-of-state number for the length of their assignment. To narrow down a location within the Fayetteville area, the Fayetteville ZIP code guide is more useful than the area code.

A Short History of 910

Area code 910 was created in 1993 in a split from area code 919. The original 910 territory was much larger and stretched into the Piedmont Triad. On December 15, 1997, area code 336 was created for the Triad and most of the western portion of the old 910 territory, leaving 910 with the southeastern region it covers today.

The 472 Overlay Explained

By the early 2020s, the region was running out of new 910 numbers. In its February 2022 release, the NCUC said the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) estimated that the remaining supply of 910 numbers would be exhausted in late 2022; its August 2022 release updated that estimate to the first quarter of 2023 (NCUC).

Rather than split the region again, the NCUC chose an overlay. Its order of June 25, 2021, in Docket No. P-100, Sub 137D, approved 472 as a second area code for the same geographic area. Under the plan:

  • Nobody had to change numbers. Existing 910 numbers stay 910.
  • 472 is assigned only after 910 runs out. The NCUC said no new 472 numbers would be assigned until the remaining 910 numbers were completely exhausted.
  • Beginning October 7, 2022, customers in the region could be assigned a 472 number when they requested new service or an additional line (NCUC).

That means a neighbor down the street, a new Fort Bragg arrival or a recently opened business can have a 472 number. It is just as local as 910.

Ten-Digit Dialing in Fayetteville

The NCUC says customers with 472 numbers "will be required to dial the area code and phone number for all local calls, just as customers with telephone numbers from the 910 area code do today." In other words, when calling across town you dial all 10 digits, for example 910 plus the seven-digit number, even if both phones are in Fayetteville.

The commission's checklist for the overlay still applies to anyone setting up a household or business:

  • Store every contact with the full 10-digit number, including the area code.
  • Make sure automatic dialers, life-safety and medical alert systems, alarm and security systems, security gates, call forwarding and voicemail accept 472 as a valid area code.
  • If a device or service rejects a 472 number, contact the provider rather than assuming the number is wrong.

Fort Bragg Phone Numbers Use 910

Fort Bragg sits inside the 910 area, so on-post offices list 910 numbers. The installation's visitor information page shows examples:

  • All-American Visitor Control Center: (910) 907-5165 or 5166
  • Truck Plaza Visitor Control Center: (910) 907-5168 or 5169
  • Army Community Service: (910) 396-8682

Some Army pages still write numbers in seven-digit form, such as "432-8193." From a civilian phone, add 910 in front. For directions and pass rules, see the Fort Bragg visitor access guide.

Scam Calls That Look Local

Because 910 and 472 are familiar to people here, robocallers often fake them. The FCC calls this "neighbor spoofing": displaying a number similar to your own so you are more likely to answer. Spoofing with intent to defraud is illegal under the Truth in Caller ID Act, but it still happens. The FCC's advice:

  • Don't answer calls from unknown numbers; if you do and something feels off, hang up.
  • If a caller or recording asks you to press a button to stop the calls, just hang up.
  • Avoid answering questions that can be answered "Yes" or "No."
  • Never give out account numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords or other personal details on an unexpected call.
  • If someone claims to be from a company or agency, hang up and call the number on your statement or the official website.
  • Set a password on your voicemail.

A local area code is not proof that a caller is local or legitimate. If you think you have been scammed, you can file a complaint with the FCC. For other local resources new residents need, see the DMV and registration guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What cities use the 910 area code?
The North Carolina Utilities Commission names Fayetteville, Jacksonville, Lumberton and Wilmington, plus Fort Bragg, in Cumberland, Onslow, Robeson and New Hanover counties. The code also reaches surrounding southeastern North Carolina communities between the Sandhills and the coast.
What is area code 472?
Area code 472 is an overlay for the 910 region, approved by the NC Utilities Commission in June 2021. It covers the same territory, and beginning October 7, 2022, new lines could be assigned 472 numbers once 910 numbers ran out.
Is a call from a 472 number a scam?
Not necessarily. 472 is a legitimate southeastern North Carolina area code assigned to real customers. However, scammers spoof local-looking numbers, so treat any unexpected caller asking for money or personal information with caution, whatever the area code.
Do I need to dial 910 for local calls in Fayetteville?
Yes. The NC Utilities Commission says local calls in the region require the area code plus the seven-digit number, for both 910 and 472 numbers. Save contacts with all 10 digits.
Does Fort Bragg use the 910 area code?
Yes. Fort Bragg is inside the 910 region, and its offices list 910 numbers, such as (910) 907-5165 for the All-American Visitor Control Center. When an Army page shows only seven digits, add 910 in front.
Will my 910 phone number change because of 472?
No. The NC Utilities Commission said customers can keep their current 910 numbers. The 472 code is only assigned to new service or additional lines after the supply of 910 numbers is exhausted.
