Fort Bragg & Federal Civilian Jobs (NC): How to Apply

This guide covers Fort Bragg in North Carolina, the Army installation next to Fayetteville. Fort Bragg, California is a separate city, so add "North Carolina" or "NC" to every job search. The post was named Fort Liberty from 2023 to 2025, and some older announcements and directory listings still use that name (USAJOBS).

Step 1: Search USAJOBS the Right Way

USAJOBS is the federal government's official job site and the starting point for almost every civilian job on Fort Bragg. Search by location using "Fort Bragg, North Carolina" rather than a keyword alone, and run a second search for nearby Fayetteville to catch VA and other agency jobs off post.

Each announcement has its own "How to Apply" and "Required Documents" sections. The VA's Fayetteville office calls these sections your primary guide for applying, and the same holds for Army postings: a missing document can knock you out before a person reads your resume. Read the "Who May Apply" line first to confirm the job is open to your category, such as the public, veterans or military spouses.

The Fort Bragg Civilian Personnel Pathway

Army civilian jobs on post are announced on USAJOBS, and the on-post Fort Bragg Civilian Personnel Advisory Center (CPAC), (910) 396-6001, supports the installation's civilian workforce. Once you have a tentative offer, the garrison's Civilian Employee One-Stop Shop gathers new-hire resources, including the fingerprinting office, onboarding and professional development programs.

Help Before You Apply

Two offices in the Soldier Support Center on Normandy Drive help with federal applications:

• Employment Readiness Program (Army Community Service): third floor, Building 4-2843, weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., (910) 396-2390 or (910) 396-1425. Its Federal and On-Post Jobs page covers government, NAF and contractor work, and specialists help with federal-style resumes and interview preparation.
• Transition Assistance Program: Wing C, Room 1-C-18, (910) 432-0700. TAP keeps a job announcements board with federal, local government and on-post sections, plus an email distribution list for new postings.

NAF and MWR Jobs at Fort Bragg

Nonappropriated fund (NAF) employees run Fort Bragg's morale, welfare and recreation programs. The Employment Readiness Program lists typical NAF roles as child and youth services staff, fitness center attendants, hotel and lodging staff with Army Lodging, recreation and event coordinators, and food service and restaurant staff. Fort Bragg NAF vacancies appear on USAJOBS, so search "Fort Bragg, North Carolina" and look for NAF pay plans in the announcement.

NAF jobs are often the quickest way onto post for spouses and family members who want hourly or part-time work. The Department of War's military spouse employment page states that Military Spouse Preference applies to nonappropriated fund positions as well as appropriated fund ones.

DoDEA School Jobs

Fort Bragg's on-post schools belong to the Department of Defense Education Activity, which now uses the name DoWEA (Department of War Education Activity) on its website. Its Work for DoWEA page splits hiring three ways:

• Educators (teachers, school counselors, nurses and psychologists) apply in DoDEA's Employment Application System.
• Education aides apply on DoWEA's USAJOBS aide portal.
• Other positions are posted on DoWEA's USAJOBS page.

VA Medical Center Fayetteville

The Fayetteville VA Medical Center at 2300 Ramsey St. is part of the VA Fayetteville Coastal Healthcare System. Its jobs and careers page points applicants to USAJOBS for openings and notes that, except for a few health care jobs, most positions require an online application. The page also lists dedicated nurse and physician recruiters and warns that federal employees seeking a transfer, and applicants claiming veterans' preference, need additional forms.

Federal Hiring Preferences

Veterans' Preference

The Office of Personnel Management's veterans' preference guide sorts eligible veterans into groups:

• 10 points: disabled veterans, regardless of rating (CPS for 30% or more, CP for 10% to 29%, XP for under 10%)
• 5 points: preference eligibles with no disability rating (TP)
• 0 points: sole survivorship preference (SSP)

When an agency scores applicants numerically, it adds the 5 or 10 points to a qualified veteran's score. Under category rating, OPM says veterans with a compensable service-connected disability of 10% or more (CPS and CP) are placed at the top of the highest category, except for scientific and professional positions at GS-9 and above. To claim 10-point preference, submit an SF-15. Service members still on active duty can use a statement of service showing an honorable discharge expected within 120 days, and the agency will require a DD-214 before appointment. Military Spouse Preference Program

The Department of War's Military Spouse Preference (MSP) program covers spouses of active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Coast Guard and full-time National Guard, who relocate on a permanent change of station (PCS). Key rules:

• It applies to positions in the commuting area of the sponsor's new duty station.
• The spouse must have married the service member before the date of the PCS orders.
• The spouse must meet pre-employment requirements and rank among the best qualified. A best-qualified MSP applicant blocks the selection of other competitive candidates.
• It can be used once per PCS and covers both appropriated fund and NAF positions.

Military Spouse Noncompetitive Appointment

Separately, federal law lets agencies appoint certain military spouses without full competition. A 2024 OPM final rule confirms that spouses married to members on active duty remain eligible for this authority through December 31, 2028. Starting January 1, 2029, those spouses will need PCS orders dated on or after that date. Look for "military spouses" in an announcement's "Who May Apply" line.
